In Clarksville, MO a recent ice storm caused major damage that will require approximately
$100,000 in debris clean-up. The thick coating of ice on trees and lines caused power outages
leaving many homes without heat. Downed trees, lines and limbs blocked streets and driveways
throughout the community.
As outlined in the emergency preparedness packet distributed this summer, the American Legion
opened its’ doors as the Clarksville warming center. The American Red Cross provided cots.
Neighbors checked on neighbors and shared food, warmth and in some cases lodging. City
employees salted streets, moved fallen trees and limbs but were hampered by downed poles, live
lines in, under and on top of many trees blocking entrances and exits to homes and businesses.
The ice began to form on Saturday, December 8th and hundreds of emergency crew members
worked straight through in effort to restore power. The city’s water substations were also affected.
Electronic switches which operate pumps and supply readings on water levels were not functioning
and the water operator had to operate the pumps manually as needed. No power to the
communication tower left the community without a warning system for Fire, police and hospital
communication as well as internet service. Broken and downed electric poles across roadways
prevented access to the tower until the utility company could clear the path on Wednesday.
A public service announcement was made by the Mayor today via Group Cast Messaging Systems
to which Clarksville belongs. In the message citizens were advised that a plan is being designed for
debris clean up and efforts to secure reimbursement are being made with SEMA and FEMA. A
location for debris disposal and burning is to be confirmed on Monday in a Special Called meeting of
the Board of Alderman.
