Veterans of Foreign War
Post 4610 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was organized in Clarksville, August 11, 1982. Following much
preliminary work by Dave Wyatt, a group of 27 men met a Rosie's Café. Ninety days later the post was chartered with
41 charter members.
Following organization, meetings were held in the Senior Citizens Building until obtaining the present building on Front
Street formerly owned by Suzanne Biggs.
Dave Wyatt was the first post commander and served that office for two years. Mrs. Janet Church was first auxiliary
president and also served 2 years.
On September 2, 1986, the post celebrated its fourth anniversary with a carry-in dinner. Guests from three other VFW
Posts were present. District Commander Dave Wyatt and District Auxiliary president Janet Lockwood, both members of
the Clarksville post, spoke. The highlight of the event was the burning of the mortgage.
Not only active locally, members have held key offices at the district level. In 1986 Dave Wyatt was District
Commander of VFW for the 17th District and Janet Lockwood was Auxiliary District President. Gracey Wyatt has
served as trustee and flag bearer. Donna Woodson served as district treasurer; Rosed Webb, Jr. Vice President, Meldora
Carson, Historian and Janet Church was voted outstanding auxiliary president in the district.
The post has been generous in helping volunteer programs. In a cooperative project with the American Legion it
provided a wheelchair for the Veterans Hospital in Columbia. Another joint effort with the American Legion for Memorial
Day Services at Greenwood Cemetery and dedication of the flagpole there.
The Post contributes to ALS, holds fund raisers for the Cancer Society, conducts safety programs and outfitting the
Khoury League team in Clarksville. It has donated numerous flags in the area including Clopton School and classrooms,
band, city, sky-lift, Boy Scout troops, and Hannibal LaGrange College. They have also adopted a veteran in the Veterans
Home in Mexico to provide personal attention and gifts.
Awards and citations earned by members of the post and the auxiliary cover the walls and demonstrate just how active
this post is.
